School Buildings
Diocesan School for Girls : Art-Technology Building
We designed the first stage of this building in 1990 to house the
School art and home science departments in a purpose-designed facility
incorporating many innovative teaching facilities. Ten years later,
the advent of design and technology as totally new curriculum areas
meant that additional facilities were required and some of the original
rooms needed to be reconfigured.
There are two food technology rooms which both provide six fully-equipped
kitchen areas designed to replicate a typical modern domestic kitchen.
A design decision to minimise theoretical work in these rooms meant
that they could be planned without the constraints of having large
writing surfaces. The two food labs differ slightly in design to cater
for junior and senior students. The junior lab has lower island benchs
so that smaller girls can more comfortably prepare food, for example.
The art department makes specific provisions for senior students
with specialised rooms for printmaking, scupture and photography.
Of special interest is the large teaching darkroom which can accommodate
up to 15 students at a time; this adjoins a photography studio which
is free of "wet" activity and used for clean activities
like mounting of work and display.
