History

The practice was formed in 1991 by Graham Upton who had previously been a partner in the award-winning Auckland practice of Fairhead Sang Carnachan.

Graham was educated at Auckland Grammar School and graduated from the Auckland School of Architecture with honours in 1983.

Since its beginning, Upton Architects has varied in size but essentially remains a "sole practice". Initially located in Newmarket offices sharing facilities with two other larger firms, UA moved to a purpose-built studio at Graham's new Epsom home in 1996.
